So, here's the lowdown on why carpets get soiled so fast. You've probably never considered how miraculous a fabric your carpets really are to put up with being walked all over every day and hold up for years. if it were any other fabric like your shirt it would be shredded to pieces in no time.
Like your clothes, carpets need regular cleaning, even the EPA recommends that homes with carpet have cleaning done at least every 1-2 years to maintain a healthy indoor environment. Carpet manufacturers recommend professional cleaning every 1-2 years even if the carpet doesn't appear dirty. Carpets can look clean and hold up to 10 lbs of dry soil in a one square foot area. In fact, the best way to clean carpet is BEFORE IT APPEARS soiled. You don't wait to wash your clothes when they LOOK dirty, you clean them because you know they need regular cleaning. If you wait until the fabric appears badly soiled, cleaning WILL help, but some staining cannot be completely removed. But won't carpets get dirtier quicker after they're cleaned? This is true if carpets are not cleaned properly. It is also true if too much cleaning agent is used and not rinsed well. Cleaning your carpets with improper techniques will leave residue behind that makes the carpet get dirty faster. Even some professionals don't clean carpet the correct way. Another problem with waiting too long before cleaning carpets is that the soil builds up. If the carpet is excessively soiled, some of the deep soil may rise to the top and require a 2nd or even 3rd cleaning to remedy the problem. So why else do carpets get so dirty? Every time you and your pets walk inside, your shoes have picked up soil from the lawn, the driveway, etc., etc., everything you walk on gets tracked onto the carpet. Furthermore, every time you cook in your kitchen, oils become airborne and eventually land in the carpeting. Even if your carpet looks clean, it may not be clean. Regular, professional cleanings keep your carpets looking their best and, thus, protecting your investment. Regular cleaning also promotes a healthier home environment. Ashes on the carpet Dust the area with cornstarch or baking soda then let it sit for about an hour and vacuum. Spray a dry cleaning solvent on a clean rag and use this to blot the area on the carpet with the stain. Keep blotting till the solvent is absorbed and the stain fades away. Afterward, dab the carpet with a water moistened rag to take out the solvent then dry the area by blotting it with dry paper towels. Melted wax on a carpeted floor Opposite to most techniques for stain removal you have to wait till the wax hardens before you remove it. Once the wax cools, with a dull knife scrape off as much residue as you can. Next, cover the area with 2 sheets of paper towels one on top of the other and with a warm iron press on it. Be careful not to set the iron too hot as it might scorch the carpet fibers. Remove the paper towels and repeat the procedure with new towels until all the wax is removed. Should any wax still remain use some dry-cleaning solvent then blot off. Chocolate spills on a carpet Act immediately by scrapping as much of the chocolate off the area as possible. Utilizing a clean white rag apply dry cleaning liquid on the spot and blot. If after that a stain is still present use a mixture of one cup tepid water with a teaspoon of gentle dish washing detergent on it. Blotting the mixture from the outer portion of the stain toward the center, then follow on with rinsing the spot with water. Always blot with paper towels and do not use too much solution or water, do not soak the carpet. Dry the area by blotting it with dry towels and applying pressure. Repeat until it is as dry as you can make it then let it air dry or use a hair dryer. Yes, Christmas is a great time for getting your carpet cleaned. Did you know your carpet came from the factory protected with tender loving care? Years ago, carpet manufacturers learned a very valuable lesson about carpet protection. They found if they applied carpet protector to the carpet during the manufacturing process, it would help the carpet last longer, resist soil and stains, and protect it from premature wear. So, what did they do? They started applying carpet protector to the carpet right there at the carpet mill. How does carpet protector really work? Carpet protector works much like the wax does on your car. Wax repels water, Dirt, staining from road tar, damaging sunlight rays that cause fading, when your carpet is And more. The wax doesn’t allow these foreign substances to stick to your car or fade the paint. Carpet protector works the same way, repelling dirt, oil, and stains from sticking to your carpet causing permanent damage. It allows your carpet to look newer longer and last up to twice as long because you will be removing 80% more dirt from your carpet when you vacuum. If dirt can’t stick to the fibers, it won’t stay in your carpet. Removing all that extra dry soil will ensure you are lengthening your flooring investment. After all, it’s not spills or spots that cause permanent damage to your carpet, it’s the dry soil that acts like sandpaper and “grinds away” at the carpet fibers that cause the permanent damage. How is carpet protector applied? After cleaning your carpet or upholstery our technicians will mist the protection on the fiber. Then, they’ll use a carpet rake to rake the protector in. This step aids in pulling the protector down deep into the fibers and to distribute it more evenly. This allows the protector to penetrate all the way down to the base of the fiber to help protect from larger spills. Keep your carpet looking new, fresh, and beautiful with carpet protector. Does protector make my carpet and upholstery stain proof? Protector isn’t a “cure all”; it’s a “safety feature”. It’s an invisible protective coating that you can’t see or feel, but it allows you the opportunity to attend to a spill before it penetrates the fiber and cause a permanent stain. No carpet is stain proof, but carpet protector will certainly help keep your carpet and upholstery feeling fresh and looking newer and more beautiful longer. Ask your technician to apply protector today. You’ll love the results. Pet Stains & Odor Run Spot Run - Urine Spots
What should you do when your pet “goes on the carpet”? Are puppy puddles putting you in a particular predicament? Well, not to worry, that’s what we are here for. First of all, if you have a pet that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better. Some technical tips on urine: When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will continue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor. At this stage it dramatically affects the dye structure of the carpet. To clean the urine spot: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it. DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER SPOT REMOVERS OR ALL PURPOSE CLEANERS ON URINE! YOU MAY SET THE SPOT PERMANENTLY! But since there may not be someone near where you live here are some suggestions for caring for your rug:
Stain Removal Procedure It is always best to attack spills and stains immediately. When a spill occurs dilute with plenty of water. Blot from the edge of the spill toward the center to prevent spreading or causing the "ring" when using solvents. Do not rub the area. For a solid spill take a spoon and scoop-up carefully. On old, dry, or stubborn stains; saturate, blot, and brush. Repeat this operation as often as necessary to remove the stain completely. Stain Removal Kit Clean cloths/sponges, clothes brush, mild detergent (no bleaches or alkalies), white vinegar, dry cleaning fluid, weak ammonia (7% solution), alcohol, glycerin. How to Clean Stains Work quickly while blotting up spill with paper towels. DO NOT RUB. Apply proper antidote(s) with a clean, dry cloth, always working from edge to center of stain. DO NOT SOAK. Pat with paper towels or cotton towel; dry with fan or hair blower. Restore pile with clothes brush. Don't fall for it. Tell Mel: Lee County carpet cleaner resorts to trick Melanie Payne • [email protected] • April 16 Marian Dragonette thought the coupons she found for carpet cleaning were a good deal. Horizon Cleaning Service advertised steam cleaning of five carpeted rooms for $34.75 and any size room for $6.95 with a two-room minimum. Dragonette called the company and asked how much it would cost to clean four rooms and a small rug. She was quoted a price of $36. Dragonette called back twice to be sure because, she said, the price seemed too good to be true. I know, this story should stop right here. Dragonette should have hung up the phone and called another company. Because when something sounds too good to be true, it’s almost always a lie. Instead, Dragonette arranged to have her carpets cleaned on a morning when her husband was out doing volunteer work. Two men arrived at her home off McGregor Boulevard. One did the cleaning and; the other said he was there “to learn.” He got an education, all right. Because after cleaning the living room carpet, the technician (Nick was the name on the receipt) told Dragonette she needed to pay $375 to get all the carpets cleaned. “I said, ‘Wait a minute, I called three times and she said it would be $36,’” Dragonette told him. Nick responded: “No. No. I had to do a deep scrubbing.” Dragonette said she didn’t need or request a deep scrubbing. The couple don’t have pets or children in the house and the carpets aren’t soiled. Dragonette, 84 and alone with two strangers, felt frightened and intimidated. “I wanted them to leave,” she said. “But I owed them some money because he had cleaned the living room.” Nick dropped the price to $275, which Dragonette still refused to pay. Finally she agreed to $125. Then Nick told Dragonette she had to give him $3 cash for gas. Dragonette gave it to him, the men finished the job in less than 30 minutes and left. I called Horizon, asked for the owner or manager, identified myself as a reporter and spoke to a woman named “C.J.” She wouldn’t give me her last name, and after talking to me, said I couldn’t quote her. So I won’t. I’ll just tell you what she said. Nick demonstrated the deep scrub method and Dragonette must have said that’s what she wanted, C.J. explained. And, according to C.J., there is a trip charge of $2.95 for gas when a technician makes a trip to a house. Bill Labus, the manager of M&M Carpet Cleaners in Cape Coral, didn’t have a problem giving me his name, or the name of the company owner, Jeff Bramwell, when I called to ask how much it costs to clean four rooms of carpet. He estimated between $85 to $135, depending on how soiled the carpets are. Labus said he has seen companies advertise for a lot cheaper, but they can’t do a good job for that price. Bramwell has been cleaning carpets in Lee and Collier counties since the 1970s, Labus said. “The only reason he’s been in business that long is he’s fair to people and (does) a good job,” he said. So here’s my advice: Beware of companies advertising low-ball prices. They are using the ad to get a salesman into your home so he can trick, cajole or pressure you into spending more money. And even if you get them to stick to the price, you won’t be satisfied with the service. Either way, you’re going to lose.
